This tour following in the footsteps of Old Fritz takes you to the very heart of the Oderbruch (former marshland). Letschin is an old village in the heart of the Oderbruch (former marshland) and is closely linked to probably the most well-known poet from the Mark Brandenburg region - Theodor Fontane. He visited his father here, who had a pharmacy in the village, and got the inspiration to write his crime novel “Under the Pear Tree”, amongst others. The central feature of Letschin is the 5-metre high monument of the Prussian king Frederick II, which weighs a proud 500 kilogrammes. The local people of Letschin erected the monument in 1905. The citizens hid it when it was to be melted down in 1945. It was erected again in 1990 having been newly restored.

Most places owe their existence to the drainage of the Oderbruch (former marshland) by the old monarchs. This also applies to the largest colonist village in the Oderbruch municipality of Neutrebbin, which was founded in 1755. Originally, 131 immigrant families settled here. The classical style church, built according to plans drawn up by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, is a very beautiful building. Here too, the people paid homage to the Prussian king with a monument that is on show again in the village today.

Continuing in the footsteps of “Old Fritz”, you should take a break in the restaurant of the same name in Altlewin. Neulietzgöricke was the first colonist settlement to be built as a long linear village with 47 immigrants following the drainage of the Oderbruch (former marshland) in 1753. The whole village burned down in May 1832. The present church was only built in 1840. Now the whole village with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses are listed buildings.

A special recommendation for culture lovers is in the remote village of Zollbrücke that attracts art and theatre enthusiasts. The "Theater am Rand" theatre has become established as an independent project, influenced by the characterful landscape, as the founders Thomas Rühmann and Tobias Morgenstern describe it themselves.
