Nestled in the picturesque Saarow hills is the 1200-hectare Scharmützelsee. The Brandenburg writer and poet Theodor Fontane once called the lake "the Märkisches Meer", or "the Märkish Sea", the name given to the 30-meter-deep body of water in the Glubigsee chain. To this day, this term is familiar beyond Brandenburg's borders. And indeed: After the Schwielochsee, the Scharmützelsee is the second largest natural body of water in Brandenburg and, with its ten kilometers in length and 1.5 kilometers in width, can confidently pass for a sea. 

The clear water of the Scharmützelsee with its remarkable visibility depth of up to four meters attracts anglers and other water sports enthusiasts such as divers, sailors and bathers to the region. Means: A quite excellent infrastructure is provided. Around the entire lake there are restaurants, cafés, great accommodations with lake views, boat rentals and exciting leisure activities for young and old. The health resort Bad Saarow and the resort Wendisch Rietz offer everything for the perfect vacation at the lake.
