St. Mary´s church

Frankfurt (Oder)

St. Marien is the landmark of the city of Frankfurt (Oder). The five-nave hall church is considered one of the outstanding buildings of North German brick Gothic. In April 1945, the church was severely damaged during the war and burned down completely. The ruins were secured in the 1950s and have been renovated since 1979. The reconstruction of the enormous roof in 1996 is unparalleled in Germany. The greatest treasure, however, are the three twelve-meter high fascinating choir windows with their colorful medieval stained glass. The picture cycle tells the story of creation, the legend of Christ and the legend of the Antichrist in 117 pictures. The other rescued art treasures worth seeing - a 4.70 m high seven-flame bronze chandelier, the equally high bronze baptismal font as well as a gilded winged altar, which is characterized above all by the richness and high quality of the carving - are located in the nearby church of St. Gertraud. Since 2006, St. Mary's has served as a socio-cultural center. Exhibitions, concerts and an annual Christmas market worth seeing are held here: Advent in St. Marien.
