Spreeradweg

along the River Spree from Saxony to Berlin

Down the Spree by bike: The first almost 70 kilometers lead through charming countryside from the Spreewald town of Lübben, past Lake Neuendorf to Beeskow, which invites you to an extensive sightseeing tour. Even the old Fontane, who celebrated his 200th birthday in 2019, described the historic town as "... not as bad as it sounds..." and surely meant the imposing ensemble of Beeskow Castle, which was built as a moated castle in the 13th century and, with a 27-meter keep, is a difficult bastion to overcome.  The historic market square, the long city wall and the St. Mary's Church, which is visible from afar, complete the medieval experience on the Spree. The route continues to Beeskow directly along the Spree, which flows very quietly and peacefully in this section. The flat route is not very strenuous, so you have plenty of time while cycling to enjoy the beautiful course of the river. Pristine overgrown shore zones and untouched meadows are habitat for a diverse flora and fauna. With a little luck, you will spot otters, foxes, herons and cranes foraging along the way. Be sure to take a break on the riverbank and enjoy the tranquility of nature while gazing up at the sky. And of course, don't forget to swim. Along the way, there are always small swimming spots along the Spree.

If you can see the steeple of the cathedral of Fürstenwalde, you are getting closer and closer to the capital. The former bishop's seat also has many historical architectural monuments and a colorful cultural program to offer. St. Mary's Cathedral with its valuable sacramental house is just one of two in Brandenburg. And in the vaults of the historic town hall, the city's centuries-old brewing tradition is once again on display. So it's worth setting your bike down for a while and discovering the town's charms.

Before you board the S-Bahn in Erkner, you should visit the Gerhart Hauptmann Museum. The poet spent formative years for his later literary work in the city on the Spree. Today, the museum in the Villa Lassen provides an exciting insight into the life and work of the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
